Recently, OCHS students in the Black Student Union participated in a volunteer event for the local middle school; Tumwatta. This was a significant event for BSU, as educating the minds of future students is crucial to the success of the BSU program in the coming years.
Younger children need to be aware of what Black Student Unions are because it helps them understand the importance of inclusivity, diversity, and equality. It teaches them about different cultures, perspectives, and the value of standing up for social justice.
Senior Heirmela Abebe, a member of the BSU said, “By implementing clubs like BSU, it helps younger students be more inclusive and knowledgeable.”
Black Student Unions in general are very important in public high schools. They provide a safe space for black students to unite, support each other, and advocate for their needs and interests. They help foster a sense of belonging, promote cultural awareness, and address issues of racial inequality.
Abebe also stated that “it’s important to have a BSU specifically at our school because it lets other students know of our presence and provides a safe place for black students.”
BSU (Black Student Union) is a new club at OCHS. They have been meeting during mentor teams for the last 2 weeks. Plans to get started have been slow, and the first few meetings were mostly introductions and explanations of basic participation in the group.
Despite this, students in the group seem eager to be part of this new club, especially with Advisor Marcus Goodwin’s positive attitude surrounding the idea of a Black Student Union at OCHS.
Students in BSU have been working to promote it and make the club well-known here at OCHS. This has been done through social media, school announcements, and word of mouth; students in BSU have been telling friends and family about all that is going on during their weekly meetings.
