For dual varsity athlete, Colin Smith, hard work begins to pay off as he breaks Oregon City High Schools sophomore record in the one hundred meter and two hundred meter dash on Wednesday, April 16th, at Pioneer Memorial Stadium.
Smith has so far been the only sophomore athlete at Oregon City to run a sub eleven second time in the one hundred meter, and a sub twenty-two second time in the two hundred meter.
“To be honest, I wasn’t surprised in the slightest that Colin broke those records,” Kaley Smith said, “In middle school he joined two track teams just so he could beat the Gardiner School records, which he did.”
Smith has also been the only sophomore pioneer to break the two hundred meter record since 2015, ending the ten year streak that was held by Jake Harthun.
“He’s a very dedicated athlete,” coach Adam Thygeson said, “He usually surprises people because he’s a shorter kind of kid, but then all the sudden he has this crazy fast speed in him.”
In addition to breaking the sophomore records, Smith recently ran a personal record of 49.03 seconds in the 400 meter, running close to the school wide record held by Harthun, of 48.66 seconds.
“I believe Colin is well on pace to break some records looking into the near future,” senior teammate Keaton Moore says, “He’s way faster than I was at his age. Excited to watch how he grows in the coming years.”
As we near the end of the year, Smith believes that he has achieved many of his goals, and can’t wait to see what junior year holds for him.
“Breaking those records felt good,” Smith said, “I worked hard to get here, and will continue to work hard to become who I want to be.”
