As the end of the semester arrives closer, students in Mr Hedeen’s Historic Geology class and some AP Biology students attend a field trip to three geological locations. Students were given a stapled paper describing their destinations and giving them questions to answer/think about. Students arrived at the parking lot of the Zoo MAX Station where Mr Nadeen guided them to the elevators where they descended and were led to see the historical mural of the MAX station. One student, Lyla Rimes, enthused about the station saying, “It was awesome seeing the history of MAX station and the geology of it.”
Atop one of the highest points in Portland, students examine the views of the mountainside and take notes about its geologic appearance. The main focus of this destination was to survey the surrounding area.Whilst walking around the area, another student, Esther Hoffmann Miramontes, talked about, “Learning about our history through rocks was fascinating and the view was absolutely beautiful. Seeing the city below from a high point made me feel a bit ethereal.”
Students arrived at Rocky Butte and were told to grab their lunches as this was their final area. There was a full hour for students to roam around the area and experience nature. After the hike was over and all the students were together near the bus, Lyla Rimes shared her hiking experience by saying, “This destination has got to be my favorite place and not to mention how while eating I had a stunning view of the mountains.” Esther H. Miramontes also included, “I enjoyed spending time with other people who are also interested in geology and talking about different types of rocks while hiking.”
Every student got off the bus and headed towards the commons to review what they had experienced. Everyone had their 7th period excused so they had the opportunity to finish their paper packet they received at the beginning of the field trip.
