English Teacher Mr.Lynn stepped in as the new Humanities teacher for the rest of the school year after Mr. Mills resigned from teaching at OCHS. Both Mr.Lynn and the English Department Chair, Ms. Zeal, had lots of work to do.

What is Humanities?

Humanities is a class here at OCHS that explores Western and Eastern civilizations as well as literature, drama, philosophy and fine arts from the Medieval, ancient, Renaissance and Classical periods in history. To enroll in this class you need to take and pass English 11 and only seniors are allowed to take it. It’s a dual credit course for college. So students consider it to be a highly important class and having its teacher quit in the middle of the year shakes everything up quite a bit.

Mr. Lynn is an English 9 teacher here at OCHS. His freshmen students in his English classes will also have to shift to a new classroom as well. Although Mr. Lynn has not taught this class before, he does have prior experience with teaching 12th grade English classes.

“It’s going to be challenging but I’m excited to get this opportunity as it will be lots of fun. I’m doing things a lot similar to how Mr. Mills ran his class,” Lynn said.

Ms. Zeal is head of the English department this year at OCHS so she has the responsibility of rearranging all of the affected English classes. She had to help hire both a new English teacher for the 9th graders and find a current teacher who can teach college level classes.

“It was me and a few others from the English department and the administration that had a meeting to figure out who to hire and choose for the job,” Zeal said.

Wrien Christison is a senior in the Humanities class. She is one of the many students who had to suddenly adjust to having a new teacher mid-year.

“I’m excited to finally be in Mr. Lynn’s class, I’ve known him for a long time. It’s been a bit bumpy but I’ve had lots of fun,” Christison said.

Torston Zornes is another senior and has also been affected by the changes of the Humanities class. He has been facing new challenginges as he went from doing a project to a completely new thing to be working on

“It’s been challenging to adjust but I know I will be able to adjust to Mr. Lynn’s class,” Zornes said.

The semester doesn’t end until January where grades become official, so Mr. Lynn and the students will still have a solid month left.

“I believe that the students will be able to adjust easily as I’m great at listening to students’ voices.” Mr. Lynn said.
