The simplistic definition of sportsmanship is “the quality of showing fairness, respect, and generosity toward the opposing team or player and for the sport itself when competing.” (Cambridge Dictionary) As an athlete, it’s easy to become overly competitive and emotional. Even during a hard loss, Oregon City Pioneer football players stay true to their hearts.
On Friday, October 10th, 2025, OCHS varsity football traveled away to Lakeridge. This happened to be Lakeridge’s homecoming game, so nerves were heightened. The energy in the stadium was lively and intense. During the first quarter of the game, something tragic took place.

Around seven minutes after kickoff, the Pioneers were on defense, and Lakeridge’s senior lineman, Jaxson Barber, fell to the ground.
He lay on the field while stares and questions arose. Oregon City and Lakeridges’ players, coaches, and cheerleaders all taking a knee. Once the referees stepped out of the way, fans reacted visibly as the severity of the injury became apparent. The player’s ankle appeared to be going the wrong direction. After around seven minutes, we heard and saw the sirens.
The ambulance arrived, but couldn’t get onto the actual field with the way the fence was built. The EMT’s had to carry the stretcher all the way to the boy in the middle of the field. At this point, we had all just been watching this player lay in pain for around twenty minutes. They put him on the stretcher, and both teams gathered around. They guided him off the field along with the paramedics.

After Jaxson was off the field, the boys bowed their heads and said a prayer for him. As this was his senior year, and he had broken his tibia and fibula, this would be the end of his high school football career. There are a lot of ways you could define sportsmanship, but I believe the actions shown on that field showed more than any words could.
