Opinions on 8-Periods from OCHS Students

Graffitied 8 Period Day Schedule

Ian Asay

Many students here at OCHS have experienced multiple “full-8” days and have formed opinions about them. I decided to pursue an idea about these opinions and create a very small experiment relating to opinions about these full-8 days. My goal is to achieve some pattern within a sample size of five anonymous student opinions and my own and see if my hypothesis can correlate or if I find data that goes against my hypothesis. My hypothesis for this experiment is that students dislike the full-8 day schedules and believe that OCHS should go into a traditional block schedule with “A, B, A, B, A” and the next week as more B days instead of A days.

My Opinion about full-8 days

These full-8 days feel very irritating, with how little time classes have and how more homework is assigned on full-8 days rather than finishing work. Another reason why full-8 classes are irritating is that it creates three different schedules rather than the usual two schedules in traditional block schedules. This pushes the student to memorize three different schedules rather than two.

Student 1’s Opinion

Student 1 is an 11th Grade Female. She expressed her disdain towards the full-8 schedules. However her main reasons were that it separated them from her friends by giving her a different lunch time from their friends. Another reason she exclaimed was that it was too tiring for her to be inside eight different classes in one day.

Student 2’s Opinion

Student 2 is a 10th Grade Female. She explained that they felt isolated from her friends with how she has different lunch times from them and how she can’t handle the constant homework she receives every full-8 day. She felt as if teachers only assign homework on full-8 days and barely teach anything.

Student 3’s Opinion

Student 3 is a 10th Grade Female. She felt as if the periods in the full-8 days felt like they moved too fast and were unable to receive any actual knowledge from any of them. She expressed her discontent with how she gets assigned more homework rather than learning anything in class.

Student 4’s Opinion

Student 4 is a 12th Grade Male. He was mad with how he’s separated from his friends, he dislikes how he has to go through 8 periods, and how he gets assigned much more homework on full-8 days rather than A/B days.

Student 5’s Opinion

Student 5 is an 11th Grade Female. She dislikes the full-8 days by saying, “teachers don’t even teach anymore, they just assign homework and expect us to know it!” Another reason she gave was that the workload she gets is too much to bear.

Conclusion

In conclusion, most of my interviewees have said mostly the same thing. Whether it’s isolation from friends, tons of homework, or simply discontent with how teachers don’t really teach on full-8 days. They all have a shared opinion of having a negative attitude towards full-8 days. My hypothesis was proven right but not entirely, with this small group of opinions it may mean nothing towards the bigger picture, because it could be used as a comparative model, rather than if you made every student give their opinion about the full-8 days. It doesn’t mean that there is a zero percent chance of someone liking the full-8 days but it doesn’t mean there is no comparison between my experiment and reality.
