Oregon City High School's Literary Magazine: What it's About
Rebekah Shinn

The literary magazine at Oregon City High School meets every Monday in B112 after school to look over the stories, poetry, photographs, and art that students send to them.

The club members vote on the work they deem as art or appropriate in the magazine that will be posted at the end of the year. All work is anonymous to the club members. Some of the club members even submit their own work.

Freya Stillinger, a member of the club for her 3rd year, has submitted many of her works during her time at Oregon City High School said, “Hearing feedback on my work without bias lets me truly reflect on how my art is perceived and what I can do better. I see how much work that gets rejected and know that I was able to make it in, I feel accomplished knowing I was chosen.”

Being in the club doesn’t mean you have to publish. The club flourishes with the more people that become members. Amelia Oreskovich said that she enjoys the club because she is able to connect with others that also enjoy viewing art.

“I like to see what others come up with, it’s impressive to see what others can create,” Oreskovich said, “As a club member I am able to see art and connect with other members about the art we get submissions of.”

As a creative person being in the club can give inspiration back to the mind. School can take up all the time of a student but being able to view art can inspire someone to take time out of their day to reapply themselves to the things they enjoy.

“The club introduces people to new mediums of art,” said senior Molly Smith.

To keep the club going the literary magazine needs to continue getting submissions. The magazine is for the students and therefore it needs the students’ art. Cameron Sanders, a junior, said it is good for people to submit to the magazine.

“Students should submit because it is a good view into the real world. Even if someone doesn’t become a published author, they are able to have the experience of that process. Additionally it causes more creation of art which gives out more ideas and creates a better world as a whole.”
